The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for enhanced and structured collaboration between traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service to strengthen public order and community security.
He made the call on Tuesday, January 6, during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed that closer engagement between chiefs and the police would help build mutual trust and deliver improved security outcomes at the community level.
He underscored the need for traditional leaders to be recognised as key partners in maintaining peace at the grassroots, noting that chiefs often possess deep knowledge of local dynamics that can support effective policing.
The Asantehene also urged the police to train officers to better understand the customs, traditions and values of the communities they serve, describing cultural awareness as an essential element of effective law enforcement.
He further emphasised the importance of dialogue and mediation in resolving conflicts, stating that engaging communities before resorting to force should be seen not as weakness, but as a strategic and intelligent approach to maintaining law and order.
According to him, sustainable public order is achieved not through aggressive policing, but through strong values upheld by disciplined, professional and community-focused law enforcement.
