Asantehene is a national asset - Mahama commends Otumfuo’s role in Bawku peace process

President John Mahama has commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his leadership in the just-ended mediation process aimed at resolving the decades-old Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

In his remarks after the presentation of the report on the mediation process, President Mahama described Asantehene as a national asset whose influence transcends regional boundaries.

“On behalf of the Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, on behalf of senior government officials, on behalf of the government and people of Ghana. I wish to thank Otumfuo for the very honourable job he has done. He has shown that he does not belong to Ashanti alone. He’s a national asset,” he said.

He also praised the Asantehene for the transparency demonstrated in personally reading and publicly presenting the report, noting that the entire nation had followed the process live.

“We are grateful that you took the decision to be transparent and read the report yourself. The whole nation has heard it, and we are confident that we can act on it to ensure lasting peace in Bawku,” he added.

President Mahama, earlier this year, mandated the Asantehene to lead renewed mediation efforts to address the protracted conflict, which has claimed lives and displaced residents over the years.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the latest peace initiative began in April, when he held meetings with delegations from the opposing factions between April 28 and 30, laying the groundwork for renewed dialogue and constructive engagement.

The mediation process culminated on December 1, when the Asantehene concluded consultations and formally presented the mediation report on the long-standing dispute today.
