About 150 people, made up of the aged, young adults and children have benefited from a free eye and medical screening organized by ASA Savings and Loans at Tema Newtown – Mac Hotel.

Residents had their eyes tested and were screened for malaria, hepatitis B, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The event, which is organised annually throughout the company’s business centers and branches across the country, forms part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

As part of the programme, Insecticide Treated Nets were distributed to all the beneficiaries of the screening.

The Medical Doctor of Modern Care Clinic, Akugri Abdul Rahaman, who was in charge of the screening, disclosed that most of the people screened had eye-related ailments, while some tested positive for malaria and few others also tested positive for hepatitis B.

“Malaria had 6 positive cases representing 4.08%, 2 positive hepatitis B cases,11 people had high RBS sugar level representing 7.48%, 35 of those screened had high blood pressure, and a 23.6% hypertensive rate.

Also, those with eye allergy conjunctivitis were 12 representing 8.16%. However, 81% of those screened were generally safe.

He said medications were given to those who needed them.

Those with malaria were encouraged to sleep in Insecticide-treated nets as well as seek medical attention whenever they felt unwell.

Free drugs were given to them according to the type of ailments, while those whose conditions were critical were referred for treatment.

He advised participants to exercise regularly, eat a well-balanced meal and take in a lot of fruits and water to boost their immune system.

Justice Korsah, the Area manager of ASA who supervised the medical screening was elated at the number of people who showed up and assured them of the company’s continued support.

The Branch director of the Tema Newtown Business Center, Patience Gagla entreated the participants to check on their health regularly to know their health status.
