Antoine Semenyo: Why he’s Ghana’s most improved player – by the numbers

Ghanaian players across England’s top two divisions, the Premier League and the Championship, have been in remarkable form this season, earning impressive ratings on football analytics platforms such as SofaScore.

This week, in particular, stands out as one of the best for Ghanaian footballers abroad. Mohammed Kudus starred for Tottenham, scoring and assisting to earn the MVP award.

Fatawu Issahaku continued his fine run in the Championship for Leicester City, scoring another stunning goal.

And then there’s Antoine Semenyo — arguably Ghana’s most improved player since the start of the 2025/26 European season.

Is this “streets will never forget season” we’re seeing from him?

On Friday night, midway into the weekend’s fixtures, Semenyo produced another brilliant display for Bournemouth against Leeds United.

Having started the season strongly against Liverpool, a game overshadowed by an incident of racial abuse at Anfield, the Ghanaian forward responded in the best possible way, scoring twice and providing an assist in a statement performance. Unfazed.

His output was beyond the numbers, but in that moment, it reflected growth, maturity, and adaptability.

The Stats Behind His Rise

One of Semenyo’s greatest strengths this season has been his unpredictability.

Of his 17 shots in the Premier League so far, eight have come from his right foot, eight from his left, and one with his head. He’s scored three goals each with both feet — a rare level of ambidexterity that makes him a nightmare for defenders.

This explains why defenders like Timothy Castagne struggled to contain him and why Samuel Chukwueze was forced deep in support during Leeds’ defensive setup.

Statistically, only Erling Haaland has scored more goals (8) than Semenyo in the league so far, while Jack Grealish is the only player with more assists than Semenyo’s three.

More Than Numbers — The Intangibles

Beyond the stats, Semenyo’s game has evolved through his work rate, tactical intelligence, and ability to produce match-defining moments. His Bournemouth strike partner Justin Kluivert summed it up perfectly:

“He is incredible. World-class.”

But Semenyo’s rise isn’t an overnight story. It’s the result of years of struggle, sacrifice, and self-belief — qualities that have now transformed him into one of Ghana’s most reliable forwards in Europe.

A Point to Prove for the Black Stars

As Ghana prepares to face Chad in the World Cup qualifiers, all eyes will be on Semenyo. His last outing in national colours was underwhelming, ineffective and wasteful, but his club form suggests a player ready to redeem himself.

With 26 Premier League goals, he now ranks second among Ghana’s all-time top scorers in the competition, trailing only Jordan Ayew (42 goals).

If his current trajectory continues, it’s only a matter of time before he closes that gap and cements his name among Ghana’s modern greats.
