Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire constituency, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has claimed that Mr Antwi Boasiako, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, has refused to eat in protest against his detention conditions, describing the supposed hunger strike as a desperate measure amid what he terms “shocking” treatment by EOCO officials.
His comments come after the Minority caucus, along with NPP supporters, protested at the EOCO office on Thursday, to demand a review of the bail conditions and the immediate release of Chairman Wontumi, who has been in custody for over 48 hours.
The NPP members claimed that the GH₵50 million bail sum is excessive and unfair and insisted they were going to remain at the EOCO headquarters until Wontumi was released, although they eventually left the scene after three hours.
Speaking to JoyNews, Mr Dompreh expressed shock at the bail conditions imposed and criticised EOCO officials for allegedly denying legal counsel access to Mr Antwi Boasiako.
“Considering the bail conditions and the conduct of the EOCO officials—especially their refusal to grant us access—it is shocking. Even in a murder case, the suspect’s legal counsel is allowed access,” he said.
The MP described the situation as a deliberate strategy to persecute Mr Antwi Boasiako, alleging that the treatment contravenes principles of justice and fairness.
He claimed that the detained chairman has refused to eat and is currently on a hunger strike in protest.
“The truth of the matter is that he has refused to eat and is therefore on a hunger strike. No one is communicating with us officially,” Mr Dompreh added.
Despite the lack of official communication, the MP confirmed that Mr Antwi Boasiako has been taken to the NIB Clinic for medical attention.
