AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine donates fire tender to boost emergency response in municipality

AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has presented a new fire tender to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Obuasi, a move company officials say is crucial to improving emergency response and safeguarding lives and property in the municipality.

The donation forms part of the mining company’s broader commitment to safety and community resilience under its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Managing Director of AGA Obuasi Mine, Samuel Pobee, said the intervention became necessary due to the deteriorating state of the Fire Service’s existing fire tender, which was no longer fit for rapid or effective emergency operations.

He stressed that safety remains a core value of AngloGold Ashanti, adding that the company will continue to support state institutions and host communities with resources that strengthen public safety. Mr. Pobee noted that the new vehicle is expected to significantly enhance emergency preparedness in Obuasi, especially as urban expansion increases the number of high-risk areas.

Receiving the fire tender on behalf of the Assembly and the Fire Service, Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah Kanin, expressed appreciation to the mining company for what she described as a timely intervention. She assured the company of the Assembly’s collaboration to ensure the vehicle is well-maintained and fully utilised to serve residents.

Obuasi Municipal Fire Commander, DOII Matthew Atubigah, also welcomed the donation, saying it will transform the Service’s response capabilities. “The new fire truck will significantly improve our capacity to respond swiftly and efficiently to fire outbreaks and other emergencies,” he said, describing it as critical to enhancing public safety across the municipality.

The gesture strengthens the ongoing partnership between AGA Obuasi Mine, the Municipal Assembly, and the Fire Service, as the company continues to invest in initiatives that promote safety, emergency preparedness and sustainable development in its operational areas.
