Former world champion Amir Khan has lifted the lid on his motive for co-promoting a boxing event in Ghana.

The former world champion, through his Amir Khan Promotions, teamed up with Legacy Rise Sports, to organize the Battle of the Beasts fight night at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The event drew boxing legends such as Azumah Nelson and Joshua Clottey, former World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua and celebrities from Ghana’s music and movie industries.

Looking back on the event that sold-out, Khan said “If you look at some of the promoters like Eddie (Hearn), Frank (Warren), they will never come to Ghana. No one looks at Ghana. So we decided, why dont we come to Ghana,” he told talkSports.

Last week’s event was co-promoted by Legacy Rise Sports, owned by Sharaf Mahama, son of Ghana’s president John Dramani Mahama.

“The President’s son, Sharaf and Shahid have been so helpful. When I met them, they said let’s do a show here together and obviously we pushed it well.”

“It’s a new place to come to and I wanted to give it a go and make history as well.”

Before leaving Ghana, Khan met with president Mahama, at which meeting the president expressed his intentions to invest in the development of the sport.

Khan himself suggested that a future event would be better suited to a stadium than accommodates a bigger audience than the Bukom Boxing Arena
