Akosombo Dam spillage 7

Most of the resources promised by Ministers to alleviate the plight of Akosombo Dam spillage victims have still not been honored.

This is according to the investigations of security expert Col. Festus Aboagye (Retired).

After the disaster in September last year, several government officials, including the Ministers of Food and Agriculture and Education, made significant promises to help the victims cope.

Speaking in an interview with Raymond Acquah on Upfront, Col. Aboagye (Rtd) insisted that the delay in fulfilling these promises is worsening their plight.

“Since all the promises by government nothing has happened. The only money that has come from government and government officials is the 160,000 that the Vice President donated from his pocket. The twenty or so thousand that I think Egyapa Mercer [gave], some bags of cement that Alexander Afenyo Markin [donated]. That is all. The 40 million from Agric IDA has not landed, the 2020 million in the budget has not happened.”

On September 15, 2023, Ghana’s foremost electricity generator and manager of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, the Volta River Authority (VRA), embarked on the spillage of excess water from the dams.

The event, which became an issue of national concern, resulted in substantial impacts on several communities, especially those located downstream of the dams, affecting many lives, livelihoods, and the socio-economic fabric of the lower Volta basin, as well as an extended impact on other communities outside of that terrain.

The VRA announced an end to the spill on October 30—after 45 days of releasing water from the dams’ reservoir.
