Ahafo has emerged as a top-performing region for quality healthcare in Ghana, securing a high-ranking position on the national ladder for the 2025 service year.

This achievement follows a comprehensive improvement in key service indicators, most notably a surge in family planning coverage, which rose from 53.7 per cent in 2024 to 63.5 per cent in 2025.

The region’s success was further bolstered by an increase in skilled delivery, moving from 61.1 per cent to 63.6 per cent over the same period.

These gains were accompanied by a mass reduction in neonatal deaths and stillbirths, alongside a marginal decrease in the maternal mortality ratio.

Collectively, these improvements earned the region a holistic assessment score of 4.25, officially categorising Ahafo as a high-performing region.

These details were disclosed by Dr. Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu-Sarpong, the Ahafo Regional Director of Health Services, during the 2025 Health Sector Performance Review Meeting.

Held on March 12th and 13th in Hwediem, the meeting centred on the theme, “Improving Primary Health Care Through Excellence in Health Care Delivery to Achieve Universal Health Coverage.”

Dr. Owusu-Sarpong expressed profound gratitude to stakeholders, including traditional leaders, government officials, journalists and healthcare providers, for their contributions to these milestones in the newly created region.

However, she cautioned that the task ahead remains heavy, urging an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to sustain and exceed these successes.

The Regional Director emphasised that excellence in delivery requires a rigorous focus on workforce capacity building, data-driven decision-making, and patient-centred equity.

Dr. Dominic Korsah Otchere, Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the Ghana Health Service, said the current indicators confirm the tireless hard work of professionals in the region.

He urged heads of institutions to maintain strict financial discipline and safeguard facility resources to maintain public trust.

The Director further charged providers to eliminate logistics shortages and improve monitoring at underperforming facilities to ensure consistent client satisfaction and trust.

Ahafo Regional Minister Charity Gardiner confirmed in a speech read on her behalf that the government is intensifying infrastructure development.

Mrs. Gardiner noted that a portion of the District Assemblies Common Fund has been dedicated to constructing and completing CHPS compounds throughout the region.

Furthermore, she noted that plans are underway to establish a modern regional medical storage facility to enhance the timely supply of vaccines and medicines.

The review meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of shared commitments among stakeholders to refine service delivery and bridge existing gaps in the region’s healthcare system.
