Contractors say the Borteyman Sports Complex is nearing completion, with 87% of the work done ahead of the 2023 Africa Games.
This information was revealed during an extensive tour of the facility by the Local Organizing Committee, the African Union Sports Council (AUSC), and Chefs de Mission from countries on the continent.
The venue earmarked for the Games will host 21 sporting disciplines, including Swimming, Tennis, Badminton, and Volleyball.
When completed, the Borteyman facility is expected to have an aquatic center with a warm-up and competition pool that can seat up to 1000 people, as well as five tennis courts, among other amenities.
With five months remaining until the start of the games, the inspectors, led by the Coordinator for AUSC, Decius Chipande, expressed satisfaction with the work done.
“I think we are very happy with the progress that has been made so far, and the African Union is very grateful for the significant investment that the government of the Republic of Ghana has put into the construction of the facilities,” Chipande said.
The Legon facility was also assessed by the inspectors and appeared to be far from completion. Tartan tracks for both the stadium and the warm-up field are yet to be designed, and other areas, such as the director’s box and the media tribune, remain unfinished.
Both facilities are expected to be ready and handed over in December, ahead of the Games, which start in March 2024.
