The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has appealed to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly flagbearer aspirants and their supporters, to exercise restraint, discipline and maturity as the party prepares for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.
In a Christmas message issued on Thursday, December 25, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the period following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections should be used for sober reflection and responsible action, rather than internal strife.
He stressed that how the party conducts its internal contest will significantly shape its recovery and prospects ahead of future elections.
According to him, a key lesson from the NPP’s electoral loss is the central role of unity, which he described as essential to rebuilding the party’s strength, credibility and appeal to the Ghanaian electorate.
He noted that victory is only possible when party members are willing to subordinate personal ambition to the collective interest.
The Minority Leader cautioned that the flagbearer race must not be allowed to undermine the party’s long-standing values, traditions and moral authority.
He warned that acts of indiscipline, disrespect or character attacks could further weaken the party at a time when cohesion is most needed.
Calling for decorum in all campaign-related activities, Mr Afenyo-Markin urged aspirants to be mindful of their conduct and rhetoric.
“Let us treat one another and our cherished traditions as sacred. What our forebears taught through their sweat and blood, I dare say, no party member must undermine,” he said.
“Let us not act in any way that will destroy the unity, credibility, and moral authority of our party. Rather, let us build carefully and faithfully on the strong foundations laid by our leaders.”
