The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has confirmed that the wife of former Adenta parliamentary candidate, Alfred Ababio Kumi, suffered a miscarriage following a dramatic dawn raid by state security operatives.

The incident occurred on Friday, 23 May, and has sparked outrage among some members of the public and the NPP leadership. Speaking on Joy FM’s midday news, Mr Kodua described the development as deeply distressing.

“I have had discussions with his wife, and indeed it is true. It is a very sad thing that has happened today. In the midst of the trauma, she suffered a miscarriage,” Mr Kodua said.

Earlier, Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, emotionally narrated the ordeal on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem. She recounted that a group of about eight armed men, only one of whom was in police uniform, stormed her son’s residence at around 5:30 a.m., in what she described as an aggressive operation.

“Two men said they were from the CID, and I told them they could speak with me, but one just pushed me aside,” she said. “Only one wore a police uniform; the rest were in plain clothes. They forced their way into my room.”

She described the chaos that ensued as the operatives tried to enter the compound.

“They struck the gate with the butts of their rifles, trying to get in. Kumi’s wife rushed out to see what was happening. When she saw the armed men, she panicked and struggled to open the gate. One of them ordered a shot to be fired. While running away, she fell and began bleeding profusely,” she added.

Nana Ama revealed that her daughter-in-law was four months pregnant, and the fall, coupled with the shock of the moment, led to a miscarriage. The family has since sought urgent medical attention for her.

The arrest of Mr Kumi is believed to be connected to remarks he made publicly regarding the ongoing petition to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, although this has not yet been officially confirmed by the police.

The NPP has issued a formal statement accusing the government of using security officials to intimidate members of the opposition party.

Background

The arrest of Mr Kumi comes shortly after he submitted a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.

Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Adenta, alleged misconduct on the part of the committee members that, he claimed, could compromise the credibility of their inquiry.

In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of meeting with Thaddeus Sory—legal counsel for the petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area after the committee’s first hearing on May 15, 2025. Kumi claims the judges were overheard discussing issues related to the petition during the dinner.

A video of the supposed meeting has since gone viral online with many questioning the credibility of the content.
