Activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has contrasted societal reactions to hairstyles following musician Daddy Lumba’s passing.
In a verified social media post, Barker-Vormawor queried: “What makes our society love Daddy Lumba’s jerry curls… but want to deny Tyrone Marhguy an education for his locks?”
The statement references the 2021 Achimota School admission case involving Rastafarian student Tyrone Marhguy. Official court records confirm Marhguy was initially denied enrollment despite qualifying academically, with the school citing hairstyle policy conflicts.

Marhguy and another student legally challenged the decision. The Accra High Court’s Human Rights Division ultimately ruled the school lacked lawful grounds for admission denial based on dreadlocks.
This comparison emerges amid ongoing national discussions about cultural expression in educational institutions.
