Accra Technical University (ATU) Library has won an open science quiz competition against the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS), as part of the activities marking the 2024 International Open Science Week.
In the competition, ATU Library secured a narrow lead in the first round, subsequently extending their advantage to over 10 points in the second round, and maintained this lead throughout the third round, despite UGLS slightly outperforming them in that final segment.
ATU ultimately secured victory with a six-point margin and was awarded a trophy.
This year’s Open Science Week, jointly organised by the two libraries, was on the theme, “Libraries: Exploring Knowledge, Celebrating Diversity”.
The Week, seeks to raise awareness on the concept and benefits of Open Science in Ghana, encourage diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to managing and disseminating scientific information.
It also seeks to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among libraries and academic institutions.
Mr Donus Worlanyo Buadi, the Coordinator for the competition, said the event was launched on October 21, 2024, at the University of Ghana Balme Library Seminar Room, followed by a float to raise awareness within the University community.
He said a panel discussion was held on the theme “Bankrolling Knowledge: Funding Open Science in Ghana’s Academic Libraries,” which featured officials from the University of Ghana, ATU, and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
The coordinator added that other activities had been lined up for the week, climaxing it with a thanksgiving service at the Legon Interdenominational Church.
He congratulated the winning team for emerging winners.
Madam Lorren Opoku-Larbi, the leader of the ATU team, expressed her excitement over the win.
She indicated that, even though the University of Ghana trained all the ATU team members, her team succeeded in beating their “parents”.
Madam Opoku-Larbi added that the focus of the competition should not be on the win but the objective of promoting Open Science in Ghana.
