Accra: Corn miller in court for planning to set Kantamanto shops ablaze

A 26-year-old corn miller has been put before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly preparing to burn down shops at the Kantamanto market in Accra.

According to the prosecution, Kwame Asare told police investigators that he decided to burn the shops because some individuals within the market were worrying him.

He has been charged with one count of preparation to cause unlawful damage.

Mr Asare has pleaded not guilty to the charge and has been admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with two sureties by the court presided over by Susana Eduful.

Per the bail conditions, the sureties must be immediate family members of the accused earning not less than GH¢1,500 every month.

The prosecution has been ordered to file all disclosures and witness statements before the next hearing date.

The case has been adjourned to January 27, 2026.

Prosecution’s facts

Narrating the facts of the case, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Akuffo, told the court that on December 9, 2025, the complainants, led by Simon Nyala, arrested the accused person at the Kantamanto Market.

He handed him over to the Regional Police Command with a report that, while they were on surveillance at the Kantamanto market, they had information that the accused person was planning to burn down some shops in the market.

During the investigation, the prosecutor said the accused stated that some individuals within the market were worrying him.

As a result, he decided to burn down their shops.

“A search was conducted in the accused person’s room within the market, and some litres of petrol in a gallon were found and retrieved,” the prosecutor told the court.
