In the spirit of International Women’s Day 2025, and its resonant theme of ‘Accelerate Action’, Ghana is shining a spotlight on the transformative power of women entrepreneurship, particularly in the burgeoning green technology sector.

Echoing the global call for rapid advancements in gender equality, Ghana is recognizing and enacting strategies to drive women’s progress in employment, education and leadership.

Earlier this week, President John Dramani Mahama met with Valerie Labi, co-founder of Wahu Mobility, and Abena Baidoo, the company’s Chief Finance Officer, to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to supporting women-led innovation and driving sustainable economic development.

Wahu Mobility, a pioneering force in Ghana’s electric mobility sector, is manufacturing e-bikes and soon-to-be-launched electric Okadas, paving the way for a greener transportation future.

President Mahama underscored his unwavering support for women entrepreneurs, pledging to foster their growth and create a conducive regulatory environment for green technology to flourish. This commitment directly addresses the ‘Accelerate Action’ theme, recognizing that proactive government support is crucial to unlocking the potential of women in business.

Valerie Labi, a passionate advocate for youth employment, has demonstrated the profound impact women entrepreneurs can have on job creation.

Wahu Mobility has generated over 500 jobs in the past year alone, providing opportunities for delivery personnel, engineers, and other skilled workers. This achievement showcases the entrepreneurial might of Ghanaian women and their ability to drive economic growth.

With the backing of the government, Labi’s ambitious vision of establishing a green 24-hour electric vehicle zone in the heart of Accra is poised to create over 200,000 jobs in the next five years. This initiative aligns perfectly with President Mahama’s broader agenda, which includes the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank, the Big Push for improved road infrastructure, and the endorsement of electric 2-wheelers.

These initiatives collectively work to comprehensively develop and realign professionally, supporting innovative startups and propelling Ghana towards a sustainable, green economy.

Empowering women entrepreneurs is not just a matter of social justice, it’s a strategic imperative for economic growth. Wahu Mobility is a prime example of how women-led businesses can drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for Ghana.

President Mahama’s engagement with Wahu Mobility highlights the critical role women are playing in driving innovation and economic growth in Ghana. His administration’s proactive measures are paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future, where women entrepreneurs can thrive and lead the charge towards a sustainable, green economy.

This International Women’s Day, Ghana is sending a clear message: accelerating action for women entrepreneurs is accelerating action for a stronger, more equitable, and environmentally conscious nation.

Wahu Mobility is dedicated to providing sustainable and accessible transportation solutions tailored to Africa’s unique terrain and challenges. The company offers a range of electric bicycles designed and manufactured locally, empowering riders with cost-effective and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
