A public health lecturer at the School of Public Health, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Kingsley Agyemang is set to present groundbreaking research at the 32nd European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2025).

The prestigious event will be held from 11–14 May, 2025, in Málaga, Spain.

Dr Agyemang, who is also a Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South and lectures also at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and Garden City University, will deliver a presentation on his study titled “Stakeholders’ Perspective on Obesity-Related Intervention in Ghana: A Delphi Study.”

The research investigates how inclusive, stakeholder-led approaches can foster effective and culturally sensitive interventions for obesity prevention in Ghana.

His work aligns with the broader objectives of ECO 2025, which seeks to foster international dialogue around the complex and multi-dimensional causes of obesity, and the development of sustainable, long-term solutions.

The inclusion of Dr Agyemang’s study in the Congress underscores the growing global recognition of regional perspectives and context-specific strategies in addressing non-communicable diseases, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

By bringing a critical voice from sub-Saharan Africa, the research highlights the importance of locally informed public health policy and the vital role of community-based insights in developing impactful health interventions.

Drawing upon contributions from Ghanaian policymakers, healthcare professionals, and civil society actors, the study exemplifies the type of cross-sectoral collaboration that ECO 2025 seeks to encourage. Its methodological emphasis on participatory consensus-building reflects the Congress’s commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and practical applicability in the real world.

Dr Agyemang’s dual capacity as both an academic and a legislator uniquely positions him to bridge the gap between research and policy. His role on the Parliamentary Health Select Committee enhances the research’s relevance to national health governance, reinforcing the importance of evidence-based policymaking in addressing Ghana’s and Africa’s public health challenges.

His participation at ECO 2025 also signals a broader shift in the global health narrative—one in which African researchers and institutions are taking on increasingly influential roles in shaping international health agendas. By sharing Ghana’s contextual experiences in obesity prevention, Dr Agyemang’s presentation will contribute meaningfully to discussions on adapting global frameworks to diverse cultural and economic realities.

The European Congress on Obesity remains a critical platform for advancing public health research, policy dialogue, and knowledge exchange. Dr Agyemang’s contribution will not only enrich the global conversation but also reaffirm the need for regional ownership, stakeholder engagement, and culturally grounded strategies in the global fight against obesity.

The MP is also a serving member of the Parliamentary Health Select Committee.
