The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency, Dr Kingsley Agyeman, has launched a decisive campaign to combat environmental degradation in the area.

This is aimed at restoring ecological balance and safeguarding the livelihoods of his constituents.

The constituency is currently grappling with widespread environmental destruction, primarily driven by illegal mining activities. These operations have led to the pollution of vital water sources and the devastation of farmlands, including cocoa plantations that form the backbone of the local economy.

While residents have voiced deep concern, many feel powerless in the face of these threats and have persistently appealed to their MP for intervention.

“As the MP for the area, I have received numerous concerns from constituents regarding the devastating impact of illegal mining, polluted water bodies,s and the destruction of farmlands. I can no longer sit idly by while these illegal activities continue to erode the livelihoods of my people,” Dr Agyeman stated with conviction.

In response, Dr Agyeman has initiated immediate and strategic action, beginning with a critical security intervention. He convened a high-level meeting with the Regional, Divisional, and District Police Commanders in the Abuakwa South Municipality.

According to the MP, the meeting focused on formulating practical strategies to address the illegal mining menace and restore order.

“Our discussions centred on the security concerns affecting our communities, particularly the severe impact of illegal mining,” he said, stressing the need for coordinated action.

He underscored the importance of enhanced cooperation among security agencies.

“We recognised the need for stronger collaboration, intelligence sharing, and proactive enforcement to restore safety and environmental sanity in our municipality.”

Dr Agyeman reaffirmed his commitment to equipping the security agencies with the necessary resources and political backing to enforce environmental regulations effectively.

“I remain unwavering in my support for our security services. I will provide the logistics and political will required to clamp down on these destructive activities. Together, we will protect our people, preserve our land, and uphold the dignity of Abuakwa South.”

The Divisional and District Police Commanders, along with other heads of security agencies in the municipality, have pledged their unflinching support for efforts to reclaim Abuakwa’s natural environment.

In a parallel move, Dr Agyeman convened a bipartisan forum involving all political stakeholders. The forum yielded a united front, with participants agreeing to rise above partisan politics to confront the environmental crisis threatening the municipality.

“In line with my commitment to ending this menace, we organised a bipartisan forum where we resolved to tackle illegal mining in the constituency without allowing political affiliations to stand in the way,” Dr Agyeman affirmed.

Beyond enforcement and political collaboration, Dr Agyeman is advocating for long-term, sustainable solutions. Acknowledging that youth unemployment is a key driver of illegal mining, he is working to create alternative livelihood opportunities.

“For this reason, I am actively using my office to attract investors to the constituency to establish diverse businesses that will provide decent employment for our youth.”

He remains optimistic about the constituency’s development prospects.

“Engagements with my contacts around the world have been encouraging. There is a bright future ahead, but for these opportunities to materialise, we must maintain a sustainable environment that is attractive to investment.”

Dr Agyeman concluded with a heartfelt appeal to individuals engaged in environmentally destructive practices, urging them to embrace sustainable livelihoods.

He encouraged the youth to consider alternatives such as crop farming, vegetable cultivation, livestock rearing, or poultry farming, ventures that not only generate income but also protect the environment for future generations.
