Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, has expressed grief over the passing of Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, describing the loss as “devastating” and “deeply personal.”
In his message of condolence issued on Tuesday, 8th July, Dr Agyemang eulogised the late MP as not only a colleague in Parliament but also a “brother and friend” with whom he shared both political and familial ties.
Dr Agyemang revealed that he and the late Kumi had spoken just days prior to his passing. Their final conversation, which lasted over an hour and a half, touched on matters ranging from political dynamics in the Eastern region, their roles as first-time MPs, constituency challenges, and the inner workings of Parliament.
“Today, I am left in utter disbelief knowing that my brother is gone,” he wrote.
Reflecting on their unique camaraderie, Dr Agyemang recalled light-hearted moments where the two would joke about their constituencies.
Beyond his grief, Dr Agyemang called on Ghanaians to ensure that the late Kumi’s legacy does not fade with time. He stressed the need for continued support to the late MP’s young family, pledging to do his part to uphold Ernest’s memory through acts of compassion and care.
“It would be a shame if, after all the loud weeping and glowing tributes, we each returned to our routines and allowed his memory to slip away,” he stated, urging fellow citizens and political actors to let the loss stir a deeper sense of purpose.
Dr Agyemang also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the New Patriotic Party, particularly the Eastern Region branch, and the people of Akwatia.
“Ghana has lost a promising servant of the people whose passion and potential were unmistakable,” he added.
The MP has passed away after a short illness. The details of his death are not disclosed, but Joy News’ Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent Kweku Asante reports that he was in Parliament the previous week.
His death is a big blow to the NPP and Parliament, where his expertise will be missed.
