Member of parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has proposed a bold, community-led solution to address the chronic underfunding of special needs education in Ghana.

Speaking at a donation ceremony where he presented GH¢45,200 to the Kibi School for the Deaf in the Eastern region to cover student meals through the end of the term, Dr. Agyemang urged religious and traditional bodies to play a more active role in supporting children with disabilities.

“Government cannot do it alone. We have over 200 churches and 20 mosques in this municipality. Just imagine if each of them contributed something small, these schools would never lack,” he declared.

His intervention followed an emergency plea from the school, which faced dire food shortages due to delayed government funding, a situation that could have left dozens of students hungry despite being in class.

But Dr. Agyemang’s appeal went beyond charity. He announced plans to launch a “community dialogue” aimed at building a structured, transparent support system, where churches, mosques, market groups, and civic associations contribute regularly to the upkeep of special needs institutions.

Headmaster Mr. Kumah Cephas welcomed the initiative, praising the MP’s consistent commitment to the school. “Dr. Agyemang has always stood by us. We don’t take this for granted,” he said, also highlighting the school’s historic performance in reaching the quarterfinals of a regional science and maths quiz.

Municipal Director of Education Mrs. Comfort Ofori Appiah also backed the proposal, noting that community partnerships are critical in addressing persistent gaps such as inadequate teacher accommodation and a shortage of teaching materials.

As Ghana intensifies efforts toward inclusive education in line with SDG 4, Dr. Agyemang’s call for a faith-based support model could serve as a blueprint for national replication, bridging the resource divide and bringing hope to some of the country’s most underserved learners.
