The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South Constituency, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, is pushing the frontiers of transformative education through an initiative designed to build a solid foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for young learners.

Dubbed “Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz,” it has become a flagship academic competition in the constituency, bringing together all Junior High Schools (JHS) to engage in a spirited contest of intellect, curiosity, and innovation.

Now in its sixth year, the competition continues to positively impact thousands of pupils across 78 Junior High Schools and 92 primary schools, spanning public and private institutions, including a school for the deaf.

Since its inception, the initiative has significantly enhanced learning outcomes, particularly in mathematics, science, and spelling at the primary level.

The Municipal Director of Education for Abuakwa South, Madam Comfort Ofori Appiah, praised the initiative as a powerful catalyst for academic improvement throughout the municipality.

According to her, the quiz has made a measurable difference in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance.

“In our 2024 BECE results, all our top performers had participated in the competition from the quarter-finals through to the finals. They all excelled. The same trend has been observed in previous years. This proves a direct correlation between the competition and improved learning outcomes,” she noted.

Madam Ofori Appiah expressed particular satisfaction at the rise of schools such as Asiakwa R/C Primary School and Apedwa Presby JHS, which had not previously distinguished themselves academically.

“These were not schools that had reached the top in the past, so for them to now emerge as champions shows that the impact is reaching the grassroots. Every school now wants to be a part of it,” she remarked.

It also emerged that some early participants of the competition have gone on to represent their secondary schools in the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz. Several of these bright scholars have earned admission into leading universities abroad, including Memphis University in the United States.

Dr Agyemang explained that the competition is designed to offer students an early advantage in STEM education, a field he considers essential to Ghana’s development trajectory.

“The world is moving towards STEM. For the next generation to become relevant and contribute meaningfully to national development, they need preparation that goes beyond the standard classroom experience,” he said.

“Through this competition, students are deepening their grasp of core concepts in mathematics and science,” Dr Agyemang added.

The MP affirmed that his broader vision is to build the capacity of students within the constituency so they can confidently compete with their peers from top-tier institutions locally and internationally.

Over the years, Dr Agyemang has consistently financed the competition in collaboration with the Abuakwa South Municipal Education Office. In addition to financial backing, he has provided essential teaching and learning materials to support participating schools in their preparations.

The 2025 edition of the competition concluded on a high note, with Asiakwa R/C Primary School and Apedwa Presby JHS emerging as champions of the Kingsley Spelling Challenge and Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz, respectively.

Addressing the finalists at the closing ceremony on Friday, May 23, Dr Agyemang applauded their resilience and brilliance.

“We are incredibly proud of your achievements and the spirit of excellence you have demonstrated throughout this journey. Continue to soar,” he told the students.

The initiative’s impact is already resonating among pupils, educators, and parents. One contestant shared how the competition had transformed her confidence and academic approach.

“This competition has helped build my confidence to speak in public and approach challenging topics with ease. I used to dread speaking in front of others, but now I feel empowered. I’m grateful to our MP for this opportunity,” she said.

A parent also lauded the initiative, “Since my son started participating in the quiz, I have observed a marked improvement in his appreciation of classroom learning. This is exactly what we need for our children in the Abuakwa South Constituency.”

Madam Comfort Ofori Appiah used the occasion to call on philanthropic organisations to partner with the initiative to scale up its impact and reach.

“I commend the MP for spearheading such a laudable initiative. However, there is room for others to join in and support. With more partners, we can enrol additional schools and ensure that no child is left behind,” she urged.

Looking ahead, Dr Agyemang revealed plans for additional educational interventions aimed at boosting literacy levels throughout the constituency. He also announced a bold new vision to collaborate with international investors, particularly from Hollywood, to establish Africa’s largest movie studio and Artificial Intelligence (AI) centre in Abuakwa South.

He believes this venture will unlock even more opportunities for the youth.

Through this bold, consistent investment in education, Dr Kingsley Agyemang is nurturing a new generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders, sowing purposeful seeds today for a luminous and empowered tomorrow.
