A four-phase, 135-page book about life and leadership has been launched at the Osu Restoration Temple in Accra.
Authored by Deacon Wisdom Kwame Nuworkpor, currently the Chief Internal Auditor of the Absa Bank Ghana, “The value of the Weaker Arm, Leveraging Limitations for Extraordinary leadership” is not only an awe-inspiring, riveting memoir about the life of a consummate professional, but may well become the seed that will birth many more professionals, who for now are weaker arms by dint of financial struggles.
“The plan is to use part of the proceeds of this book to set up the Weaker Arm Foundation to support brilliant but needy students who need help to complete their education” Deacon Nuworkpor disclosed at the launch.
The promise of the foundation was a lived, painful experience by Deacon Nuworkpor, which he lucidly captured in Phase one, the Foundation of the Weaker Arm book.
At age 19, the young Nuworkpor faced what potentially could have extinguished any dream of pursuing higher education. His stronger arm, his dad, who financed his education, died with no hope or investment to fall on. Every cedi he had, he invested in a family house which was at lantern level.
His future was at a shattering point. He had gotten admission into what used to be the Institute of Professional Studies, and was looking for a lever of support.
His uncle, who he thought was a ray of hope, became a killer of dreams when he suggested that the young, brilliant Nuworkpor should pursue a career in carpentry.
In that moment, the weaker arm had become even more fragile.
But when all hope is gone, God has a way of restoring his own. An Aunty came through with no drama, no conditions, just the funding and pocket money for upkeep.
The philosophy of the weaker arm
Many situations, circumstances, and people reveal the weaker arm philosophy in many unimaginable ways. From biblical perspectives to personal professional experiences, Deacon Nuworkpor frames the weaker arm situation as the most underestimated, hugely undervalued yet palpably significant resource needed in the office, at home, in the church and the community to make an impact.
When you look down on that tiny jar of oil in your room, or the co-worker struggling to meet targets and deadlines, or incensed with the boss who said no to your promotion and sat on it for years, or the misfortune that set your dreams apart, remember you may well be in a weaker arm situation. What you do to and with the people in that situation may determine whether a greater, fuller purpose will be ignited or hope dimmed for life.
And when he broke his left wrist playing volleyball in church a few years ago, little did Deacon Wisdom Nuworkpor know a weaker arm situation in the literal sense had been created. His right hand was dominant, and so a little twitch to an insignificant left wrist was minor, or so he thought.
But when he got home from the hospital and walked into the loo and the bathroom, he realised just how every single body part, however small, has a significant role to play.
Through that discomforting weaker arm situation, Deacon Wisdom Nuworkpor has found a title for what would be his first ever book, which chronicled how he scrubbed dishes and black pots for his mum’s business in the hot terrain in Tamale, to his security man role in the coldness of London’s nights.
Today, he has risen from the ranks of a shoeshine boy, a payroll clerk, to becoming the chief internal auditor of a pan-African bank- Absa- swimming against the tide of many weaker-arm situations.
“You may see a position high up there, and you want to go for it, but your qualification is not there. That is a skill gap. That is the weaker arm you need to develop. Add tools to your toolbox. Learn something new. Pick up books to read. Ask questions…. When the time comes for you to bring out what is in your tools box no one can stop you,” Deacon Nuworkpor said.
