Abronye

Former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Moses Abor, has confirmed the arrest of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing it as troubling and politically motivated.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Abor revealed that Abronye voluntarily reported himself to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday morning in the company of his lawyers.

According to him, the NPP executive remained at the CID headquarters until about 1 p.m., when he was quietly transferred into the custody of the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).

“I was at the headquarters when I saw two CID officers move him out. Later, my checks confirmed he had been taken to NIB. The vehicle he came with returned, but he wasn’t in it,” Mr. Abor recounted.

He suggested that Abronye’s arrest was linked to recent comments he made criticising the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, during the court appearance of two women accused of making abusive statements against President John Dramani Mahama.

“I don’t think what Abronye said warrants an arrest or detention. People said worse things against former President Akufo-Addo and nothing happened,” he argued.

Mr. Abor further condemned a raid on his residence by armed policemen in search of Abronye, which he described as unnecessary and intimidating.

“On Sunday, they forced their way into my house. Some even climbed over the wall to enter. I couldn’t resist them because of how they were behaving. I was home with my younger brother, so we had to cooperate,” he said.

He stressed that although he maintains a cordial relationship with Abronye, he has not seen him in over a year.

The police are yet to issue an official statement on Abronye’s detention at the NIB.

Meanwhile, Abronye has formally petitioned several foreign embassies, including those of Côte d’Ivoire, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Canada, seeking political asylum.
