Henry Nana Boakye

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra region.

Nana B described the move as “illegal” and “a clear contempt of court,” and questioned the EC’s independence, suggesting the Commission may be bowing to political pressure from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The Electoral Commission must be very principled. Are they succumbing to NDC’s pressure? Are they trying to save their jobs because the NDC Chairman says they are going to lose their jobs?” he queried in an interview on JoyFM’s Top Story on Tuesday, July 8.

The EC last week announced plans to rerun the parliamentary polls in 19 polling stations, citing unresolved issues from the 2024 general election.

However, the NPP has fiercely opposed the move, insisting it undermines a directive from the High Court that asked the EC to collate and declare the results from the remaining polling stations.

“What is left is the collation of three polling stations and the declaration thereafter. What has changed? What has happened?” Nana Boakye asked.

He argued that if the Commission genuinely faces challenges implementing the court’s directive, the proper course of action should be to return to the court for clarity, not to unilaterally rerun elections.

“There is a pending High Court order. If you think that a certain arm or institution is not complying with the directive of the court, you go back to the court for further directive,” he said.

According to him, the EC’s decision risks setting a dangerous precedent where political parties can trigger reruns by disrupting electoral processes.

“The precedent is so dangerous, so catastrophic. If we are not careful, the precedent is that anytime you think you are not winning any election, cause problems, cause chaos, distract the process, so that when the Electoral Commission is unable to conduct collation as a result of the police not providing security, then the Electoral Commission will come out to say let’s go for a rerun,” he warned.

The NPP maintains it has already secured victory in the constituency with a margin of 4,014 votes and sees no legal basis for a rerun.

“We have won this election by a 4,014-vote difference. This is a clear majority. We have all our pink sheets,” Nana Boakye asserted.

“We will not be part of this illegal process because it is in contempt of court. It is a dangerous precedent.”
