A Plus vows to make history as first independent MP to be re-elected in Ghana

Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has declared his determination to become the first Independent Member of Parliament in Ghana’s history to win re-election, after already making history as the first Independent MP from the Central Region in the 2024 general election.

Speaking on The KSM Show, A Plus expressed strong confidence in his political strength and grassroots support, insisting that no challenger would be able to unseat him if he decides to contest again.

“I’ll make history as the first independent candidate, a Member of Parliament to win a re-election. That’s never happened in the history of Ghana.”

He underscored that his initial victory as an independent candidate had already broken long-standing political norms.

“I’ve made history by being the first person to win as an independent candidate in the Central Region.”

Future political decisions tied to treatment and performance

A Plus said his decision on whether to contest the 2028 elections would depend largely on how he is treated politically, particularly within Parliament, where he has chosen to caucus with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Whatever decision I’ll make in terms of contesting in 2028 will be based on what they do.”

Despite that caveat, the outspoken MP left little doubt about his confidence going into any future contest.

“But the fact of the matter is that anybody who contests me, like I told you before, anybody who contests me, I’ll beat them hands down.”

Focus firmly on Gomoa, not ministerial ambition

The Gomoa Central MP was also emphatic that his political journey is not driven by personal ambition for executive power or ministerial appointments.

“The president knows that me, I have told him that me, I don’t want ministerial appointment. That is the last thing that I’ll do with my life. My focus is Gomoa.”

He stressed that his priority remains development and representation for his constituents rather than advancement within government.

Independence with influence

Although elected as an independent candidate, A Plus acknowledged aligning himself strategically in Parliament, insisting that such cooperation must come with mutual respect.

“I decided to caucus with them and they have to treat me well.”

He framed his independence as a strength rather than a limitation, positioning himself as a lawmaker accountable first and foremost to the people of Gomoa Central.

As Ghana’s political landscape continues to evolve, A Plus’s bold declaration sets the stage for what could be another landmark moment in parliamentary politics, should he succeed in securing a second term as an independent legislator.
