A fighter for democracy - NDC pays tribute to Dr Omane Boamah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has celebrated the life and service of the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing him as a fearless leader, a brilliant strategist, and a compassionate servant of the people.

During the state burial of the helicopter crash victims at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, the NDC said Dr. Omane Boamah’s leadership qualities were evident from his youth.

“From his earliest days as a fearless student leader as NUGS President, his leadership was already evident. Dr. Omane Boamah’s life was defined by courage, intellect, and unyielding dedication to justice.”

The party recalled how Dr. Boamah confronted the government when GETFund payments were withheld.

“He stood up to the NPP government… and pursued it with relentless vigour. For this, he became a thorn in the side of his political opponents, enduring hostility and pressure with unflinching resolve.”

The tribute recounted his days as a youth activist, working with the likes of Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Bernard Mornah in the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), “transforming it into a formidable voice for the masses, a living nightmare for the NPP government of the day.”

The NDC noted Dr. Boamah’s dedication to election integrity, saying, “He was one of those brave young activists who personally went to printing houses to monitor the ballot printing process… ensuring the sanctity of the vote.”

The party highlighted his public service record, which included roles as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology (2009–2012), Minister for Communication and Presidential Spokesperson (2013–2016), and, most recently, Minister for Defence.

“In all these roles, he served with candour, grace, and integrity until the tragic event of 6th August 2025, in line with duty,” the tribute said.

As Director of Elections, the party said, Dr. Boamah brought “unmatched dynamism” to campaign organisation, training polling agents, mobilising resources, and monitoring the Electoral Commission “with the vigilance of an eagle.”

The NDC summed up his legacy by describing him as “more than a political strategist… a fighter for democracy, a compassionate human being, a man generous in spirit and quick to lend a helping hand. His rare blend of intellect, empathy, and resilience made him a treasure to our Party and nation.”
