“A cultural force and national treasure” - Tourism Minister pays tribute to late Daddy Lumba

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of celebrated Highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, describing him as “a cultural force” and “one of Ghana’s most cherished musical icons.”

In a press release issued on behalf of the Ministry and President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late musician, as well as to fans and the entire creative arts community.

“His passing is a loss to the music industry and Ghana as a whole,” the statement read. “Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural force.”

A Legacy of Musical Excellence

The Minister highlighted Daddy Lumba’s immense contribution to Ghana’s music landscape, noting that his distinctive style and masterful compositions elevated Highlife to global recognition.

“Through his timeless compositions, unforgettable melodies and unique lyrical style, he elevated Highlife music to unprecedented heights, shaping its evolution and drawing global attention to Ghana’s rich musical heritage,” she said.

“His influence inspired generations and his work became the soundtrack to the lives of many Ghanaians, both at home and in the diaspora.”

A Proud Cultural Ambassador

She further described Daddy Lumba as a true ambassador for Ghanaian culture, whose performances both locally and internationally embodied the essence of the nation.

“Whether performing on local stages or before international audiences, Daddy Lumba showcased the soul of our nation with pride, dignity and excellence. His legacy will forever remain a cornerstone of Ghanaian culture and the creative arts.”

Nation Stands in Solidarity

The Minister disclosed that she had led a team to visit Daddy Lumba’s home to formally commiserate with his family, in keeping with tradition and as a mark of the government’s solidarity.
