The General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah, says the NDC’s decision to petition the Council of State over the President’s appointment of politically connected persons to the Electoral Commission is an act in futility.

According to her, the Council of State was involved in the appointment process of these persons, hence the NDC should not expect any change of stance from them.

“Is it not the same Council of State that was consulted to choose the people? According to the constitution when the President appoints, I mean, he or she consults with the Council of State before an approval is made. So what do they [the NDC] expect the Council of State to do? Can they turn back their own decision?” she said on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Saturday.

She noted that the Council has been privy to all the protests following the appointment and has remained silent, thus confirming their complicity in the action.

“And besides they’ve heard all the arguments that are going on, they haven’t come out to say anything. They knew the people that they were approving for the president to appoint,” she stressed.

She said to avoid a repeat of the situation in the future, the CPP is suggesting that the constitution be changed to take away the president’s powers to appoint persons to the Electoral Commission.

“That is why we in the CPP are saying there should be some drastic review of the constitution. The appointment of the EC should not be done by the president. The appointment of the EC should be done by a committee of politicians or political parties, then whoever it is would have to go through the Public Service Commission. There should be about three, four, five people who have to go through the Public Service Commission, go through vetting with parliament, then swear before the speaker,” she said.
