Duty bearers have been urged to take immediate steps to repair faulty and damaged traffic lights across Accra and Kasoa to protect lives and reduce road accidents.
The call was made by the Lights for Life Social Change Movement, a group of Master’s students in Development Communication at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), as part of their academic exercise highlighting the role of communication in national development.
Ms Salamatu Issah Zin-Mara, leader of the Movement, described malfunctioning traffic lights as “silent dangers waiting to claim victims,” stressing that traffic safety was a shared responsibility.
She explained that many traffic lights had remained non-functional for months due to inadequate maintenance, vandalism, and power cuts, creating confusion at intersections, delaying emergency services, and exposing pedestrians and drivers to grave risks.
As part of their 25-day advocacy campaign, members of the group have been visiting streets in Accra, including Nima and Kanda, to assess the situation of non-functioning streetlights.
They have also interacted with road users and residents to understand the dangers associated with daily movements under such conditions.
The group has further engaged some media houses to educate the public on the need to adhere to road safety regulations and to advocate for the fixing of faulty traffic lights.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among 4,000 people, encourage citizens to report faulty traffic lights in their communities, and engage city authorities to prioritize repairs and routine maintenance.
Ms Zin-Mara emphasized that fixing traffic lights was not only about infrastructure but about saving lives, urging stakeholders to act swiftly to prevent avoidable tragedies.
