The Government of Germany has strengthened its support for Ghana’s border security with the commissioning of four newly constructed weather sheds for officers of the Ghana Immigration Service at Aflao in the Volta Region.

The facilities, located at Pillars Four, Six, Seven and Ten under the Aflao Sector Command, are designed to improve the working conditions of frontline immigration officers while enhancing operational efficiency along one of Ghana’s busiest land borders with neighbouring Togo.

The intervention comes at a critical time when cross-border movement remains high, with officers often exposed to harsh weather conditions while regulating the flow of people and goods between the two countries.

Deputy Commissioner of Immigration and Aflao Sector Commander, Mark Asamoah Boakye, described the commissioning as timely and impactful. He noted that the sheds would significantly improve the welfare and morale of officers, enabling them to perform their duties more effectively.

According to him, officers stationed at remote border pillars frequently contend with extreme sun and rainfall—conditions that not only affect their health but also compromise operational efficiency. The provision of durable shelters, he said, will ensure sustained vigilance and professionalism in managing Ghana’s borders.

“These structures will go a long way to support our officers on the ground. When personnel are well protected and motivated, it directly reflects in the quality of service delivery and security outcomes,” he indicated.

German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederick Landshoft, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s security architecture, particularly in areas that promote safe and orderly migration.

He emphasised that effective border management is not only critical for national security but also essential for facilitating legitimate trade and movement within the sub-region.

The sheds, he explained, form part of broader cooperation efforts between Germany and Ghana aimed at strengthening institutional capacity and improving working conditions for security personnel.

“Supporting frontline officers is key to ensuring efficient border governance. Germany remains committed to partnering with Ghana in promoting stability, security and development,” he stated.

The Aflao border, a strategic entry and exit point, plays a vital role in regional trade and integration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

However, the high volume of daily human and vehicular traffic places considerable demand on immigration officers tasked with maintaining security while facilitating movement.

The newly commissioned sheds are expected to provide not only physical relief for officers but also contribute to more structured and effective border control operations.

This latest intervention underscores the growing collaboration between Ghana and Germany in migration management, security and development, highlighting a shared commitment to building resilient institutions and safeguarding regional stability.
