Ing. Ben Sackey, Project Manager for the Tema Motorway and Extensions Project, has revealed plans to expand the 19.5km route to a total of 10 lanes.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, he explained that the project involves adding three new lanes to the existing four-lane concrete road.
“We are expanding the roads, we are adding ten lanes. The existing four lanes, which are the corporate road, and then we are adding three lanes,” he said.
He added that the construction team is currently prioritising the three new lanes, after which traffic will be diverted onto them to allow sufficient time for rehabilitation of the original four lanes.
“Our idea is to complete the three lanes, which we normally call the urban highway, and then we will try to put traffic back from the concrete one onto the urban highway, then we will try to tackle the concrete road, which we call the expressway,” he explained.
The phased approach, he noted, is aimed at minimising disruption to commuters while speeding up the overall project.
Ing. Ben Sackey has also reassured motorists that efforts are underway to make the route motorable amid the ongoing works.
