Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has formally responded to Ghana’s request for engagement over the ongoing investigation into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, confirming its readiness to receive a Ghanaian delegation in Riga on January 20, 2026.

Ablakwa made the disclosure in a social media post on Saturday, December 27, saying the planned visit marks a critical step toward uncovering the truth and securing justice in the case.

“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities shall be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia, on the 20th of January, 2026,” the Foreign Affairs Minister stated.

He assured the public of ongoing updates throughout the process, underscoring the importance of openness and accountability. “I promised regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and justice — I shall continue to do just that,” Ablakwa added.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to Ghanaian citizens abroad, the minister said the Mahama administration remains resolute in safeguarding the dignity of all Ghanaians. “The Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life, either at home or abroad; we are prepared to do whatever it takes to safeguard the dignity of all Ghanaians,” he affirmed.

The meeting comes amid continued public concern over the circumstances surrounding the death of the 18-year-old Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, who was found dead on June 4, 2025. Latvian authorities initially reported that Nana Agyei fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building, but his family disputes this account, citing a voice note he sent days before his death in which he claimed to have been poisoned.

The planned engagement with Latvian officials aims to deepen cooperation on the investigation and push for transparency, including involving representatives of Nana Agyei’s family in the delegation’s visit.
