The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Ashanti Region has uncovered a fake diaper manufacturing warehouse operating in an unwholesome and unhygienic environment, the latest in a series of enforcement actions targeting counterfeit diapers across Ghana.
The operation forms part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on fake and unregistered diapers—products authorities say are linked to severe health problems for children. In recent months, the FDA and partners, the Consumer Protection Agency, have intensified efforts to remove substandard and counterfeit diaper products from the market.
In Tema, more than 360 bales of counterfeit diapers were seized in July 2025 in a joint FDA and Consumer Protection Agency operation, with importers accused of misclassifying the goods to evade detection—a move that may have exposed millions of children to unsafe products.
Speaking after the warehouse operation, the Ashanti Regional Director of the FDA said the seized products had been detained and would be confiscated for destruction in accordance with regulatory procedures.
He assured that similar enforcement exercises would continue across all parts of the region to safeguard the health and safety of children and the general public. He further stated that individuals involved in the illegal production and distribution of the fake diapers would be prosecuted.
Meanwhile, Nana Prempeh has praised the FDA for the successful operation, describing it as one of the most significant discoveries in the Ashanti Region to date.
“This is one of the greatest discoveries so far in the Ashanti Region, with one warehouse alone containing over 1,400 bales of diapers ready for the market,” he said.
