Green Communities International appoints Ing. Prof. Douglas Boateng as board chair to drive Africa’s green transition

Green Communities International (GCI) has appointed Ing. Professor Douglas Boateng as Chairperson of its Board of Trustees, a move the organisation says will strengthen its leadership, expand partnerships, and accelerate its Pan-African sustainability agenda.

The appointment positions GCI to scale up its flagship initiatives—including the International Conference on Environmental, Social, Governance and Sustainable Development of Africa (ICESDA), the Pan-African Green Movement Programme (PGMP), and the Pan-African Green Awards—at a time when climate resilience and sustainable development have become national and continental priorities.

In a statement announcing the appointment, GCI’s Founder and President, Professor De-Graft Owusu-Manu, said Prof. Boateng’s leadership arrives at a “pivotal season” as the organisation deepens its commitment to environmental stewardship and social equity across Africa.

“Ing. Professor Boateng’s leadership promises to elevate GCI’s influence, ensuring that conversations translate into measurable impact for communities across Africa,” the statement said. It added that his appointment builds on his recent elevation as Chairperson of the Global Homeland Fund Implementation Committee under the Ghlobal Diaspora Council.

Prof. Owusu-Manu said the new Board Chair brings “unparalleled expertise in governance, sustainability, and industrial transformation,” making him the ideal person to steer GCI into its next phase of growth.

“His leadership will not just be about guiding the GCI, but also about shaping a legacy of shared prosperity, resilience, and sustainability for generations yet to come,” he added.

A Leader with Global Recognition

Ing. Prof. Douglas Boateng is widely regarded as Africa’s first Professor Extraordinaire in Supply and Value Chain Management, with a career spanning decades of boardroom leadership, public advisory roles, and sustainability advocacy. His work has earned him several Lifetime Achievement Awards, including recognition from Hewlett-Packard for advancing supply chain knowledge in developed and emerging markets.

In 2024, he was named Director of the Year by the Institute of Directors-Ghana, underscoring his commitment to ethical leadership and accountability in governance.

A Chartered Engineer and Chartered Director, Prof. Boateng is known for urging African leaders to embrace long-term thinking rooted in intergenerational responsibility. His NyansaKasa (Words of Wisdom) reflections—widely shared across professional and policy circles—blend African wisdom with modern governance principles.

GCI Eyes Global Influence

As the new non-executive Chairperson of the GCI Board of Trustees, Prof. Boateng is expected to guide the organisation as it transitions from advocacy into measurable impact. GCI says his stewardship will help shape policies, influence boardrooms, mobilise the youth, and strengthen Africa’s leadership in the global green transition.

Looking ahead, Prof. Owusu-Manu said the next 5–10 years could see ICESDA positioned not only as Africa’s premier sustainability forum but also as a global institution shaping ESG and green development discourse.

“By embedding governance discipline, diaspora engagement, and ESG principles into its programs, GCI will not only amplify Africa’s voice in global sustainability debates but also catalyze billions in investment for green infrastructure, industrialization, and inclusive growth,” he noted.

GCI says it aims to empower youth, women, and marginalised communities to become “architects of a resilient and prosperous future,” with Prof. Boateng’s appointment marking a major step toward that vision.
