'Barely in office, already talking power?' - Fifi Kwetey slams early succession talk in NDC

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has criticised early conversations about future presidential ambitions within the party.

He described such discussions as disrespectful to both the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 16, Mr Kwetey said any talk of presidential bids so soon after returning to power is premature and diverts attention from the work of governing.

“Especially in the first year after you have won power, any conversation regarding interest in running for power, I find it personally an insult to the NDC as a whole, an insult even to President Mahama because we have barely come into office,” he said.

He reminded party members and supporters that the NDC spent eight years in opposition and made far-reaching promises to Ghanaians, which must now be honoured.

According to him, the focus should be on delivery, not succession.

“We spent eight years in opposition, made promises to people, and we have taken over power. The promises that we made to the country, we are now implementing them,” he said.

He added that commitments made to party supporters are also far from fulfilled. “We have not even come to 10 or 20 per cent of our accomplishments.”

Mr Kwetey stressed that the party’s priority at this stage must be to help the government succeed.

He said attention should be on supporting ministers and chief executives, enforcing discipline, and ensuring accountability, rather than fueling internal power struggles.

He warned that early ambition-driven conversations risk undermining unity and focus at a time when the party is expected to deliver tangible results to justify the mandate it has received.
