Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has criticised the Minority Caucus for what he described as “shameful and undignified” conduct in Parliament on Tuesday night.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on Wednesday, December 10, he condemned the decision by Minority MPs to wear face masks during proceedings, alleging that the act was intended to obstruct parliamentary business.

The chamber erupted into chaos after Minority MPs demanded an immediate adjournment following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to defer his ruling on the controversy surrounding the Kpandai parliamentary seat.

Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh argued that no government business should proceed until the Speaker addressed the matter, which has heightened tension between the two sides of the House.

Despite the persistent demands, Speaker Bagbin proceeded with a voice vote and ruled that the House would continue with the scheduled business for the day.

The Minority responded with loud chants and attempts to disrupt proceedings, prompting heated exchanges across the aisle and further escalating the disorder in the chamber.

The impasse stems from a letter dated December 4, in which the Clerk to Parliament formally notified the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, that the Kpandai seat had become vacant.

The communication followed a High Court ruling ordering a rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency, a development that the Minority strongly contests.

Mahama Ayariga insisted that the behaviour exhibited by the Minority not only undermined parliamentary decorum but also tarnished the image of the legislative body.

He urged MPs to resolve disagreements through dialogue and established procedures, rather than resorting to disruptive theatrics that hinder the work of Parliament.
