True reflection - WAEC says 2025 scores mirror candidate performance

The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Joh Kapi, says the 2025 WASSCE results reflect exactly what candidates produced in the examination hall.

He insists the council has completed all its checks and has no doubt about the integrity of the outcome.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on Monday, Mr Kapi admitted that this year’s figures mark a sharp break from recent trends.

He said the results represent “a departure from the figures that you are seeing, a departure from what we have, you know, been seeing.”

According to him, past years recorded high pass rates across subjects, but 2025 did not follow that pattern.

He explained that the council observed “a high pass rate in all the subjects” in previous years. “But in this year, unfortunately, we have a smaller number passing,” he said.

Mr Kapi stressed that WAEC has reviewed all processes and is confident in the accuracy of the final results.

“Well, we have done all our checks. We’ve looked at everything, and on our part, it is a true reflection of the performance of the candidates,” he stated.

He maintained that WAEC’s responsibility is to conduct credible examinations and release results as expected.

“As an examining body, we would always conduct examinations and put out results as expected,” he said. For him, the 2025 outcome is not the product of external narratives but the direct expression of candidates’ performance.
