From humble beginnings: Mahama marks 67th birthday with solemn morning devotion

President John Mahama quietly marked his 67th birthday on Saturday, forgoing public celebrations for a solemn morning devotion and Holy Communion service held at his official residence in Accra.

The private, faith-centred event offered a rare glimpse into the President’s personal commitment, featuring an array of Ghana’s most respected clergy.

The service, attended by the First Family, served as a spiritual recommitment, with the President reflecting on his improbable journey to the highest office and vowing to lead Ghana with lasting impact.

The prayer service was led by the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam.

Rev. Wengam administered the Holy Communion to President Mahama and his family before anointing him “for the next phase of his life,” according to a statement released by the President’s office.

In his brief sermon, Rev. Wengam delivered a direct spiritual charge to the Head of State, urging unwavering faith and reliance on divine guidance:

“In a brief sermon, Rev Wengam urged President Mahama to remain faithful to Jesus, seek intimacy with the Holy Spirit , and trust in the Lord alone for divine success, guidance and protection.”

The General Superintendent further laid out a prophetic expectation for the President’s leadership:

“The General Superintendent further admonished the President to avail himself as an instrument in God’s hands to transform Ghana into a prosperous, peaceful and Christ-centred nation.”

The impressive list of clergy present showcased the significance of the gathering, including globally renowned leaders like Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams, Rev. Michael Ayesu, Rev. Ben Tettey, and Rev. Rtd Ernest Agyei (who served as the President’s former pastor).

Also in attendance were Rev. Andrew N Awintia, Rev. Aaron Fant, and Pastor Boateng Sarpong.

In his response, President Mahama openly shared personal details of his religious awakening and professional elevation, emphasising that his achievements were driven by fate rather than ambition.

The President “recounted his humble beginnings”, stating emphatically that he:

“…never could imagine that he was going to become President of Ghana any day in the future.”

He credited his political and personal elevation entirely to divine favour:

“He credited his elevation and achievements to the grace of God.”

President Mahama also took the opportunity to narrate the foundation of his Christian walk:

“President Mahama narrated how he became a born-again Christian at Ringway Gospel Centre, Assemblies of God at Osu in Accra, under the pastoral leadership of the former Senior Pastor, Rev Rtd Ernest Agyei.”

Concluding his remarks, the 67-year-old statesman made a pledge anchored in his faith:

“With divine guidance and favour, President Mahama promised to do his utmost to leave a lasting legacy after his tenure.”

The devotion service set a tone of reflection and renewed commitment as the President enters his 67th year, focusing the national spotlight not on political maneuvering, but on personal accountability and public service legacy.
