The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has launched an immediate investigation into a viral TikTok video that captured one of its trainers, Philip Kwame Twumasi, speaking harshly to a recruit at the National Ambulance Training School in Nkenkaasu.
In a press statement signed by Deputy Director of Public Relations, Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura, the Service said it “strongly condemns any form of bullying, harassment, or discriminatory behaviour” and is “deeply disturbed by the actions depicted in the video.”
According to NAS, disciplinary action will be taken against Mr Twumasi if the investigation confirms misconduct.
“The safety and well-being of our recruits is our top priority,” the statement stressed, adding that the Service remains committed to maintaining respect, inclusivity, and professionalism at all levels of its operations.
Background
The incident triggered widespread public outrage after the video showed Mr Twumasi addressing a recruit of Fulani descent in a manner many viewers described as discriminatory and abusive.
In response, Mr Twumasi issued a separate apology to the Fulani community across West Africa and beyond.
“This is Commander Twumasi. I’m here to apologise to my dear Fulanis wherever they’re in West Africa and the World,” he said in a recorded video, explaining that the clip was meant to “encourage” the recruit and was taken out of context.
He insisted he never intended to insult or look down on Fulani people.
“I respect you people a lot. I’m very sorry… forgive me. It will never happen again,” he added.
However, some critics have questioned the sincerity of his apology, saying they still have “reservations” and will wait for the outcome of NAS’ disciplinary proceedings before commenting further.
The National Ambulance Service has reiterated that it will not tolerate conduct that undermines the dignity of recruits or the broader public, assuring that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness.
“We appreciate the public’s concern and assure you that we are taking this matter very seriously,” the statement said, adding that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
