Atiwa West District launches four key projects to boost health care and education access

The Atiwa West District Assembly has cut sod for four major development projects aimed at expanding access to health care and improving educational infrastructure across the district.

The projects include a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound with ancillary facilities at Nkurakan, and a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities for the Sankubanase Presbyterian Basic School.

Additionally, a three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities is being constructed for the Methodist Basic School in Asamama, while a two-unit kindergarten block with ancillary facilities is being provided for the RC Basic School in Abrenya.

All four projects are being funded through the District Assembly Common Fund and are expected to be completed and commissioned within six months.

Leading the sod-cutting ceremonies, District Chief Executive Johnson Amo Anom conveyed President John Mahama’s appreciation to residents for supporting him during the 2024 elections. He said the new facilities reflect the government’s commitment to making education and health care more accessible to ordinary Ghanaians.

Mr Anom highlighted that the CHPS compound addresses a longstanding gap in basic health care for Nkurakan and Mampong—two predominantly farming communities that have gone without essential health services for years.

He added that the new classroom blocks will help eliminate the use of makeshift structures in schools across the district.

“If you have our school children using these galvanised iron sheets as classroom blocks and these same children are going to write the same exams with those in endowed schools, your guess may be as good as mine,” he noted.

As part of the construction contracts, the DCE revealed that contractors have been instructed to engage at least 20 per cent of the community’s youth to provide them with temporary employment and income.

Mr Anom also announced plans to drill 17 boreholes to address water shortages in several communities within the district.
