NPP youth wing demands probe into deadly El-Wak stadium recruitment stampede

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for an immediate investigation into the “unfortunate” stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium that led to the deaths of several young Ghanaians during a military recruitment exercise.

In a press release dated Wednesday, 12th November 2025, the group’s National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, described the incident as a tragedy that “should not be happening in this present era of advanced technology.”

The statement follows the reported deaths of six individuals—with some accounts suggesting the toll could be as high as twelve—after a crush during a body selection exercise conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces.

Expressing deep concern, the NPP Youth Wing referenced viral social media videos showing thousands of applicants in a frantic struggle to gain an advantageous position at the venue. They questioned the planning and crowd management protocols of the event.

“We are, by this statement, calling on the caretaker Minister in charge of Defense to immediately cause an investigation to be launched to unravel the circumstances leading to this tragedy,” the release stated.

The youth wing posed several critical questions, including what crowd control measures were in place, why the process was not conducted in batches given the known number of applicants, and whether officers on duty mishandled the situation, thereby triggering the stampede.

“The pursuit of dreams and opportunities should not be perilous,” the statement read, emphasising that the young people were only seeking an opportunity to serve their nation and provide for themselves and their families.

The NPP Youth Wing extended its sincere condolences to the bereaved families and well wishes to those injured. They are counting on the authorities to take prompt action to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.
