MACCCU installs solar-powered traffic signals

In the bustling town of Mim in the Ahafo Region, road users are experiencing a safer and more orderly flow of traffic-thanks to an unlikely champion of urban safety: a community credit union.

The Mim Ahafo Community Cooperative Credit Union (MACCCU) has installed the town’s first solar-powered traffic signal, a landmark project aimed at reducing frequent crashes and improving mobility in one of the region’s busiest commercial centers.

For locals, the change is already tangible. Motor riders, taxi drivers, and pedestrians say congestion has eased and the usual chaos at the junction has noticeably declined.

But beyond convenience, the initiative responds to a deadly global crisis. Road traffic crashes kill about 1.19 million people worldwide every year, with low- and middle-income countries like Ghana bearing over 90% of the burden.

In Ghana alone, more than 13,000 road crashes were recorded in 2024, leaving over 2,400 people dead and 15,000 injured-many caused by speeding, reckless overtaking, and disregard for traffic signals.

Experts say the economic cost drains nearly 2% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually, undermining productivity, healthcare, and national security.

“This project shows that development is a shared responsibility,” said Frank Kyei Baffour, Board Chairman of MACCCU. “It is not only about providing financial services but also about reinvesting in the communities that make us who we are.”

General Manager Samuel Kwasi Asuming highlighted the broader vision: “When people save with a credible financial institution, the benefits go beyond the individual. Communities thrive, infrastructure grows, and lives improve.”

The Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, Superintendent Ekow Gaisie, praised the project but cautioned that its impact depends on road users. “These lights will only fulfill their purpose if they are respected,” he said.

In a continent where traffic fatalities rank among the top five causes of death, this modest solar-powered intervention shows how innovation, sustainability, and corporate social investment can intersect to save lives.

For the people of Mim, the message is clear: community-led initiatives can illuminate the path toward safer, smarter, and more sustainable transport.

With this project, MACCCU proves that sometimes the brightest answers to complex challenges emerge from the grassroots, where even a single traffic light can transform the rhythm of a town.
