Exams malpractice shouldn't be entertained at any level – Addai-Nimoh

Former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency, Francis Addai-Nimoh, has warned that exam malpractice must not be tolerated at any level in Ghana’s education system.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, he described the recurring incidents during BECE and WASSCE as deeply troubling and called on students, teachers, and educational authorities to uphold integrity in examinations.

His comments follow the arrest of 16 people, including students and teachers, who were apprehended for exam malpractice and have since been handed over to the police.

“This issue, in my opinion, is very surprising. It appears that every year it becomes an annual ritual for BECE and WASSCE,” Addai-Nimoh said.

“Why should it even occur in the first place? For this particular instance, let me condemn those involved, whether they are teachers, students, or some from WAEC offices who may have been tempted to leak exam questions into the system. Whatever the chain is, we need to condemn it. We don’t need to tolerate or entertain exam malpractices at any level,” he stressed.

He also emphasized the importance of diligence and commitment: “That is why students are made to study hard. Once you study hard, why would you want to go for a leaked exam question?”

Reflecting on his school days, he said, “In our days, you would hardly find such things. Electricity was unreliable, and we used lanterns to study. We committed ourselves to learning and sat for our exams without indulging in malpractice.”

Addai-Nimoh challenged WAEC and the Ministry of Education to strengthen preventive measures.

“I will challenge WAEC to ensure that in subsequent years, this annual ritual doesn’t happen from 2026 onward. The Ministry of Education also has a role to play, teachers have a role to play, and the students, too. The linkage should be that we close this loophole. It is embarrassing if Ghana, in its current state, still entertains exam malpractice among our students; it is unpleasant.”
