Legal service board charged to negotiate salaries of lawyers at AG’s office

The Office of the Attorney General and the Ministry of Justice has directed the newly sworn-in board of the Legal Service to champion the remuneration of the legal staff situated at the Attorney General’s department.

At the inauguration of the board, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine, stressed that legal staff of the ministry are underpaid which impede their work.

“We need to be able to up our game when it comes to, you know, salaries and remuneration. I have been making and will make a strong case to the government or to the, I mean, the president, so that we can look at the remuneration of lawyers working at the AG’s department,” he said.

Adding that “The justice sector generally is a problem when it comes to remuneration, and so that is something that, I mean, I want to work seriously with you so that we solve that problem once and for all, so that we can attract the best, I mean, and retain. It is one thing to say we are attracting, and then another thing not retaining them, and then they exiting, because some of them sometimes use here as a training ground, because this is the best, I mean, place that you can be trained on every aspect of the law.”

The Attorney General also serving as the chairman of the service, charged members to provide strategic leadership and enhance the capacity of staff, with the aim of strengthening the country’s Legal Service.
