Aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Miracles Aboagye, has warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government that it risks losing the cooperation of stakeholders if it fails to adopt a more respectful and collaborative approach in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 16, he cautioned that arrogance and partisanship could undermine efforts to tackle the menace.
“We’ll withdraw our cooperation if you don’t check your posture,” Mr Aboagye stated, stressing that the government must work with all groups, regardless of political affiliation, to save Ghana’s environment.
He argued that alienating critical partners through divisive rhetoric or selective engagement would be counterproductive.
According to him, the consequences of withdrawing such cooperation would be severe for the government’s anti-galamsey agenda.
“When our cooperation is withdrawn, the NDC government cannot achieve even 20% of its policies to deal with the galamsey menace,” he added, highlighting the need for consensus and inclusivity.
Mr Aboagye urged the government to demonstrate humility and a willingness to engage broadly with communities, civil society, and political actors.
He noted that the scale of environmental destruction required a united national front, not a partisan struggle.
“This fight is too important to be reduced to political competition. It is about Ghana’s survival,” he concluded.
