MTN MoMo users face six-hour nationwide blackout for system upgrade

MTN Ghana is urging its millions of Mobile Money users to plan ahead for a six-hour service disruption scheduled for Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The telecommunications giant has announced that all MoMo services will be unavailable from 12:00 am to 6:00 am to allow for a critical system upgrade.

The planned downtime, though temporary, will affect every aspect of the Mobile Money platform, including deposits, withdrawals, person-to-person transfers, and merchant payments.

This poses a significant advisory for Ghana, where MTN Mobile Money has become the primary financial tool for a vast majority of the population, handling billions of cedis in transactions and serving as a key driver of financial inclusion.

In an interview with Citi FM, Charles Asamoah Assah, Chief Technology & Service Delivery Officer of Mobile Money Limited, explained the necessity of the outage.

“Please be informed of a planned system upgrade on 17th August 2025, from 12 midnight to 6 am. During this period, all Mobile Money services will be unavailable. This upgrade is to improve our services to you. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding.”

The upgrade is aimed at enhancing service delivery, with similar system modernisations in the past focusing on improving transaction speeds, bolstering platform security against fraud, and paving the way for new digital services.

MTN Ghana has assured its customers that normal operations will resume immediately after the maintenance window closes, and all funds will remain safe and secure.

This is a vital heads-up for businesses and individuals who rely heavily on mobile money for their daily financial activities, as it highlights the need to complete all urgent transactions before the scheduled outage.
