'I was fired' - Uncle Ebo Whyte

Renowned Ghanaian playwright and marriage counselor, James Ebo Whyte, affectionately known as Uncle Ebo Whyte, has revealed an untold chapter of his life that saw him jobless for over a year after being abruptly fired from his second job.

In a conversation on the upcoming 12th episode of The Career Trail, airing on Joy Learning TV and JoyNews, Uncle Ebo shares a deeply personal story about how what seemed like a promising career trajectory took an unexpected and painful turn.

“After working with that company for 4 to 5 years, they fired me. I ended up staying home for one and a half years,” he disclosed.

Even more startling, he said the company presented eight serious charges against him, allegations that painted a damaging image.

“If you knew the charges, you wouldn’t want to talk to me. It portrayed me as the worst rogue ever,” he somberly said.

Uncle Ebo’s career began with promise. After completing his studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, he did his National Service at Asempa Publishers.

“For my National Service, I worked with a wonderful company and a wonderful boss, Rev. Peter Parker, at Asempa Publishers. He was a retired British soldier, who had relocated to Ghana to become a minister of the Presbyterian Church, and he was running a publishing house for Christian Council of Ghana, called Asempa Publishers. So that is where I did my National Service and I was retained. My working career began from there,” he fondly recalled. ‘

He spent six years at Asempa Publishers before being poached by another publishing company, an opportunity that seemed like a step forward but ended in an unexpected dismissal.

After his dismissal, Uncle Ebo spent 18 months unemployed, navigating the pain of rejection, loss of identity, and the fear of an uncertain future.

What exactly were the eight charges leveled against Uncle Ebo Whyte? How did he navigate the emotional and professional fallout of being dismissed, and what did the journey to recovery look like?

These questions, and more, will be answered in the 12th episode of The Career Trail, which premieres on Saturday, August 9, airing first on Joy Learning TV at 4:00 PM, followed by a second showing on Joy News at 6:30 PM.

The Career Trail is a programme designed to have conversations with accomplished Ghanaian entrepreneurs to share their stories with young learners who aspire to become like them.

These honest, in-depth interviews aim to motivate and guide young learners as they make crucial life and career decisions.

Don’t miss this rare glimpse into the life of a man who has inspired many but was once fighting to hold onto his own dream.
