Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga

The highly anticipated second edition of the Democracy Cup is set to kick off with a symbolic clash between Parliament’s football team, captained by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and the Judiciary’s team in an exciting curtain-raiser match.

This exhibition game, slated for Friday, August 29, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, promises a unique spectacle of intergovernmental camaraderie and competition.

The announcement was made during parliamentary proceedings yesterday, August 1, 2025, by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor.

“Following a successful launch of the second edition of the Democracy Cup, I wish to bring to your attention that on Friday, August 29, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, we are excited to announce a curtain-raiser match between Parliament and the Judiciary,” First Deputy Speaker Ahiafor stated.

He added, “Negotiations for this match are far advanced, and we are hopeful of a fruitful collaboration with the judiciary, with the involvement of the Acting Chief Justice.”

“Parliament’s team will be captained by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga. The judiciary is yet to provide a captain of their team, but we are confident in our abilities to compete when they bring their team,” Mr. Ahiafor confirmed, hinting at the legislative body’s readiness for the pitch.

Training for Parliament’s squad is expected to commence in earnest in the coming days, as lawmakers swap their suits for football kits.

This match will not only showcase the sporting prowess of Ghana’s legal and legislative luminaries but also reinforce the spirit of cooperation between these vital branches of government, often seen as distinct entities.

The exhibition game will precede the main Democracy Cup clash, which will pit Ghanaian football giants Accra Hearts of Oak against Accra Great Olympics later the same day at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This dual-fixture format is designed to draw maximum public attention and engagement.

The Democracy Cup, initially introduced in 2024, is a parliamentary initiative that strategically leverages the unifying power of football.

Its core mission extends beyond mere sport and aims to promote democratic values, civic participation, and peaceful coexistence.

The inaugural edition, held in 2024, successfully garnered widespread attention, featuring various political and sporting figures, and this year’s event is poised to build significantly on that momentum.

The launch of the 2025 edition earlier this year attracted a host of prominent personalities, underscoring its growing national importance.

Attendees included celebrated former Black Stars players, influential legislators, and key Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association.

Their presence highlights the broad appeal and cross-sectoral support for an initiative that blends Ghana’s passion for football with its commitment to democratic principles.

As the nation gears up for this unique blend of sport and governance, the Democracy Cup promises to be more than just a football tournament; it’s a vibrant display of unity and democratic spirit, bringing together various facets of Ghanaian society under the universal language of the beautiful game.
