The Ga Traditional Council has officially received WOI (former Private) Joseph Ashitey Hammond, a distinguished World War II veteran who turned 100 years old on May 10, 2025.
In a courtesy call to King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II (Ga Mantse), the centenarian shared reflections on his wartime experiences and delivered a heartfelt message of leadership and gratitude.
Nathaniel Attoh, a respected senior sports journalist known as Citizen Attoh, shared his impressions on Facebook:
“He is still very well spoken and has energy. Listening to him … I was encouraged and striving hard in life …He recollected the tough experiences at war … and admonished the Ga people to take their rightful place … by equipping the youth … contribute to Ghana’s forward movement.”
A Life of Service and Inspiration
Historic Journey: WOI Hammond served with the Gold Coast Regiment in the Burma Campaign during WWII—a campaign that shaped his character and deepened his lifelong commitment to Ghana.
Honors & Recognition: In 2020, the Ghana Armed Forces promoted him from Private to Warrant Officer Class 1, acknowledging his contributions as one of Ghana’s most revered living veterans.
Centenary Tribute: Ahead of his May birthday, the GAF and the Joseph Ashitey Hammond Foundation launched his centenary celebrations in February 2025. His family emphasised honouring him as “the sole surviving witness to the historic February 28 crossroad shooting” during wartime service .
A Message to the Ga Community and Ghana
During his meeting with the Ga Mantse, WOI Hammond called on his people to uphold their legacy and take an active role in national affairs:
He urged investment in young generations, warning that without empowerment, their contributions to Ghana’s progress could weaken.
Using his own military service as an example, he framed patriotism—not personal glory—as the path to lasting impact.
