Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren believes his side is capable of causing major upsets at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana will get a first taste of this year’s competition on Monday when they face defending champions South Africa in Group C’s opening game.
Bjorkegren, speaking ahead of the game, admitted the Black Queens are far from favourites but is confident they can still cause problems in the competition.
“As a team, of course, we know we are a little bit the underdogs or a dark horse. We are not one of the biggest favourites people are talking about, but I know that we have the quality to beat all the teams in this group and this tournament, so I am really looking forward to starting tomorrow (Monday), and I think we can have a good chance to be successful,” he said at his presser.
“For me, it’s very clear that if you’re a coach at this level, pressure can exist. You need to like the situation. You can be a little bit nervous, but you have to control what you can control. Especially for me as a coach, I need to show my players that they can trust me in difficult situations, and I think they do.”
The Black Queens are only making a return to the competition since their last appearance in 2018, when the competition was hosted in Ghana.
They are in Group C alongside South Africa, Mali and Tanzania.
